Originally launched in 2016 to help raise awareness of sustainable waste management by making it fun, Biffa’s Wasteater trucks have been on the road and gorging on the nation’s garbage for several years, but the time has now come for a brand-new crew to join their ranks. The Wasteaters have added five shiny new monsters to their lineup, all sporting friendly, agreeable names that begin with a ‘W’.
Built to promote the importance of the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), the first fleet of Wasteaters was designed specifically to be environmentally friendly, consisting of Dennis Eagle Olympus 23 bodies on 6x2 rear-steer chassis and Olympus 19 bodies on Narrow rear-steer vehicles manufactured from 95% recyclable material. Safety was also a top priority, with low-entry Elite cabs offering drivers the best possible view of the road to ensure vulnerable road users remain protected. This new wave of monsters is no different, maintaining the Olympus 23 bodies on Elite+ 6x2 rear-steer chassis with Beta 2 bin lifts configuration.
“Biffa is on a mission to help communities across the country reduce, reuse, and recycle more,” said Tanya Reed, Brand Partnerships Manager, Biffa. “Advocates of proper recycling, the Wasteaters provide a fun, public-facing way to bring Biffa’s message of sustainable waste management to life, so putting the characters on our trucks is a great way to get them out in the community and build awareness about their monster-sized mission. The new eye-catching characters have been launched on five new vehicles and are part of our business waste collection crews in Cardiff, Farnham, Glasgow, Manchester, and Sheffield. By helping more young people see waste as a valuable resource, we’re changing the way communities think about recycling, building a more sustainable future for everyone.”
Built to consume all kinds of different waste streams, from organic food waste to dry mixed recycling and everything in-between, the Wasteaters have a monster appetite for rubbish. They can easily gobble up more than 25,000 kg in a morning collection alone! Self-proclaimed ‘fussy eaters’, Biffa is using these loveable characters to emphasise the importance of correctly separating waste into the right bins, endorsing that good waste management leads to a healthier, happier planet.
Alongside the trucks’ tireless efforts to clean up the UK’s streets and champion sustainability, Biffa has also produced a multitude of educational activities that effectively highlight the impact waste has on the environment. This includes Wasteater-themed colouring sheets, wordsearches, and educational waste workshops that help students better understand how they can make a difference to waste disposal.
“It is a pleasure to be able to play a vital part in such a crucial initiative,” said Keith Day, Managing Director, Dennis Eagle. “Sustainability is always top of mind for our business, so it’s a privilege to help emphasise the importance of this across the UK through Biffa’s latest line-up of Wasteater RCVs. We’ve had an excellent relationship with Biffa for many years – it was an easy decision for us to continue our involvement with this exceptionally creative venture.”
Biffa is actively encouraging anyone who spots one of their monster trucks out in the wild to take a photo and share this on social media. Why not join in the fun and add your snap to the Wasteater collection? To find out more, visit: Meet the Wasteaters: Seen throughout the UK - Biffa.
