Everything under one roof: Becoming the one stop shop for the City of Hamilton, Bermuda

With no refuse collection vehicle (RCV) manufacturing available on the island, for a long time the City of Hamilton in Bermuda has been making do with RCV components from three different manufacturers across three different countries. Now, by working closely with Dennis Eagle, they gain the benefit of everything under one roof.

Situated on the main island of Bermuda in the western Atlantic Ocean around 650 miles east of North Carolina, the City of Hamilton is an incredibly remote location. This makes it particularly difficult to gain access to RCVs and their related parts quickly, especially if components are being shipped from multiple manufacturers around the world. With no RCV dealer available on the island itself, spare parts can take months to arrive from overseas, often leaving trucks out of commission for a considerably long time. The resulting downtime was proving very costly for the city, making refuse collection highly inefficient.

With a few legacy Dennis Eagle trucks previously used on the island and an already established relationship with Terberg using their bin lifts, the City of Hamilton’s Operations Manager decided that consolidating their assets down to a single supplier would serve to streamline their experience. The decision was soon made to send their Fleet Manager along with an operator over to Dennis Eagle’s headquarters in Warwick. Following the successful visit, an order was placed for a new Elite+ 4x2 Narrow 10m3 body RCV, equipped with a Beta bin lift.

“It was truly a great experience getting to visit the Dennis Eagle site in person,” said both City of Hamilton employees. “We appreciated the training we received, the hospitality of our UK hosts, and the opportunity to see the RCV build quality first-hand. From its initial concept to our final inspection, it's been great seeing this order through every step of the process. Being able to have a one stop shop for all our requirements is a huge step in the right direction. The team is looking forward to putting the new truck to work in Bermuda very soon!”

In addition to the new RCV, the City of Hamilton has also been provided with three years’ worth of service parts, ensuring they are well-equipped for potential repairs without having to wait months for the required components. This reduces cost, saves time, and maximises efficiency, enabling refuse collection crews to do their jobs without compromise. Training was also arranged by Dennis Eagle experts in the UK to optimise the team’s understanding and proficiency when operating the vehicles, seeing the City’s extensive waste collections remain safe, reliable, and effective.

The City of Hamilton’s collections consist of commercial and residential waste, recyclables, and curbside collection from bars and restaurants, including cooking oil. The City also collects bulky refuse by appointment, and in recent times has emphasised the importance of good etiquette surrounding waste management, releasing communications to island residents and businesses in a bid to ensure operators and the community stay safe while keeping streets clean.

“It’s very satisfying to know our RCVs are on-hand to help the City of Hamilton’s waste collection crews moving forward,” said Mark McKinnon, Export Sales Manager for Europe, Terberg Environmental. “Not only will they be able to enjoy the additional safety features and comfort of our Elite+ cab and Olympus Narrow body, but also gain peace of mind in knowing spare parts are readily available should a repair be required, keeping critical waste collection services running smoothly. It’s been a pleasure to work with them from start to finish.”
